The risk of crashes may get lowered by the use of caffeinated substances in long distance commercial drivers


Extended and monotonous driving periods in a sedentary position are experienced routinely by long distance drivers of commercial motor vehicles. This factor when combined with their need for night time driving is often associated with occurrence of wake time drowsiness. For the safety of both the driver and other road users, it is critical to be alert as the likelihood of crashing is increased due to lapses in vigilance while driving. Long distance drivers utilize many strategies to stay awake and maintain their alertness while driving and use of stimulants such as caffeine to stay awake is one of such strategies.
